  • cups cornmeal
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening melted or 2⁄3 cup oil


  • Combine all ingredients.
  • Pour into a cornbread mold or muffin pan.
  • Bake in a brick oven, smoker, or oven at 400° about 30 minutes.
