Lured by the many species of butterflies found on Mt. Magazine, enthusiasts gather annually on the weekend after Father’s Day to participate in the Mt. Magazine International Butterfly Festival. Since 1997, thousands of people from 45 states and half a dozen countries have attended. Mt. Magazine has an extraordinary richness of butterfly species with virtually all Arkansas resident butterflies represented in good numbers in the State Park and valley below. The nation’s showcase butterfly, and the Arkansas State Butterfly, the Diana fritillary (seen only occasionally in other parts of the U.S.), consistently reproduces on the mountain. The conjunctive festival occurs annually featuring events at the State Park and in the Gateway city of Paris (19 miles below the mountain). Events include arts, craft & food vendors, KIDZ Zone, Live Butterfly Conservatory, Art Show, Quilt Show, Photo Contest, Miss Butterfly Pageant and live entertainment. Check it out at www.butterflyfestival.com or www.ParisArOnline.com. Call the Paris Chamber for more information and exact dates 479.963.2244.
