The story of Bagelfest is one of hospitality. In 1986, when the local Mattoon plant became the Lender’s Bagel plant, brand owner Murray Lender knew he needed to introduce the Mattoon community to the bagel.  It wasn’t a common item in the homes of most people in Mattoon, so Murray hosted a free bagel breakfast to introduce to the community and potential employees to what a Lender’s bagel is all about. Tables were lined end to end down the middle of Broadway Avenue in downtown Mattoon. Young and old alike enjoyed the hospitality and the community spirit of the event. The breakfast inspired leaders in the community to make the free bagel breakfast into a full-scale community festival, and the Mattoon Bagelfest was born.  Thirty-two years later, the event is still going strong with five days of fun, music, food, and, of course, the “Free Bagel Breakfast.”
