Cahokia Mounds State Historic site is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and US National Historic Landmark. The site interprets the remains of a city that flourished here about AD 1050 to 1300. At its peak, the site was about 5 square miles in area, with 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants, and about 120 earthen mounds of varying shapes and sizes, the largest of which, Monks Mound, is about 100 feet tall and 14 acres in area. The site preserves 2200 of the original 4000 acres, including over 70 mounds. Today a world-class interpretive center, iPod tours, hiking trails, and year-round events preserve and interpret the Mississippian culture group that created America’s first city.
