  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1⁄2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 3 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 pound candied orange slices chopped
  • 2 cups chopped raisins
  • 2 cups chopped nuts
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  • Cream butter and sugar until smooth.
  • Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after addition.
  • Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and add to creamed mixture.
  • Stir in coconut.
  • Place flour in a separate bowl; add orange slices, raisins and nuts, stirring to coat well.
  • Combine the two mixtures into a very stiff dough that should be mixed by hand.
  • Pour into a greased and floured 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Bake at 250° for 2 1⁄2 to 3 hours or until tests done.
  • Combine orange juice, powdered sugar and vanilla.
  • Pour over hot cake.
  • Let it sit overnight or up to 2 days before serving.
